The science fair was a big deal at my elementary school. It was split into 2 divisions by age; the older students were judged by parent and local scientist volunteers, while the younger grades were judged by the older students (after training). I really enjoyed them; I thought the blue ribbons were quite motivating.
Of course, I've always liked presenting my work out loud (judging was based on the display board and on a one-on-one session with the judges).

Journals would have been awesome: a source of new projects to try as well as a place to show off.
