I missed the post-Sputnik science fair era by a few years, but they still exist here and there. Fortunately, the National Association of Rocketry still does a Research and Development event at their annula national meet. My brother bigbumble started donating cash for substantial cash prizes for the teen age division when he found himself with some money inherited from our mother. That seems to have done some motivating.
