It's not an issue of why we haven't had UFOs visit in the last 50 years, it's an issue of why didn't they come visit (and stay) 10 million years ago? Life spreads, that's what it does. Even if they labeled a pre-human Earth as a nature reserver for some reason, why aren't they already out harvesting the natural resource in the system? Why can't we see mega-scale engineering in other systems, or even just hear their radio chatter? I don't buy it. I can spin explanations, having read plenty of SF, but the simplest solution would be that either life is super rare or it blows itself up before it (including non-organic derived forms) can expand into the wider universe. Basically, the more common life is, the worse our odds of surviving the next 100 years are.
