I see now that my original post was poorly phrased, and many of my subsequent comments have been too caught up in the argumentative spirit. Let me be clear here: I'm all for authors getting paid. Not just in this post, but in others, there's been a strong undercurrent that you aren't really all that much for it. I think you're tripping over one of the unstated American cultural assumptions, that creative work (art, music, and so on) isn't really work, and therefore by implication isn't really work compensation. Accordingly, I think you should stress this more often when commenting on this topic, as it does seem to come up a lot.
