I see now that my original post was poorly phrased, and many of my subsequent comments have been too caught up in the argumentative spirit. Let me be clear here: I'm all for authors getting paid. If people can make a living doing it, that's really awesome. I also think that will be feasible less and less as a natural side-effect of modern technology. I think the current concept of copyright is doomed in the same way drug prohibition is, and I don't think the legal system should be twisted to guarantee the viability of business models when technology has moved on. The only point of this post was to explore some of the issues creative production would face in a post-copyright world.
