Up late after some ill-advised (though tasty and cardamomy) tea, so I've been doing the only quiet sunglasses work I can: prepping the carrying case I've decided to make. I happened to have an unusual leather box an aunt gave me, and a bunch of foamcore board. So I cut out 10 rectangles to just fit into the box, from which I can now cut out little compartments to hold the sunglasses, the electronics/UI box, and the battery pack. I bought some rather nice velvet yesterday with which to line it all when I'm done, and I'm thinking about making a nice Victorian-looking label on a metal sheet (either with a PCB transfer or by getting it laser-etched) to rivet to the front of the lid.
Except, after getting the rectangles all nicely cut, I realized I had no idea how wide the compartments should be for each part. It wasn't a simple matter of measuring, because the velvet would take up space and different parts needed a different level of friction. I don't care if the battery pack bounces a bit, and with the cord wrapped around it an exact fit isn't going to happen anyway, but I really would like the glasses to be held snuggly in place. Getting it all right could be a very annoying and time-consuming process. What this called for, it seemed obvious to me in my hyper, caffeinated state, was an adjustable velvet-grippiness meter.
Simple enough to make. Two small rectangles of foamcore, each the size of the face of my drillpress vise. Attach a swatch of velvet, using the same hot-glue I planned on using in the box construction. Attach those to the faces of the vise. Voila! I can now adjust the separation between the faces until I get the snugness I desire for each part. I should have thought of this sooner, really.
If only I could be in this state all the time. I'd get so much completely ridiculous work done, it would be great.
