On my fourth viewing last night I noticed several problems with the geography in the movie.
Error #1: When Frodo and company watch the ambush the southerners are moving from left to right -- supposedly marching north to the Black Gate. Yet the book makes it very clear that they would be watching from the western side of the road. Left to right would be south, not north.
Error #2: In the denouement of the Rohan story, Gandalf is speculating on Sauron's wrath while looking towards Mordor. Helm's Deep is plainly seen behind them, yet Helm's Deep faces northeast and Mordor is to the southeast.
Error #3: In the final denouement, after leaving Osgiliath heading towards Cirith Ungol, we pan up to a lovely panoramic of Mordor. Unfortunately, Barad-dûr is seen to the left of Mount Doom. This would only be the case much farther north, near the Black Gate.
