Spent a very enjoyable afternoon putting together a prototype of the metal Jacob's Ladder. It has 5 panels, connected using some of the bike chain I picked up yesterday. They're held on with wire looped through holes I drilled. This system works, but it was a big pain to do and I'm worried about metal fatigue breaking the wires eventually. The full ~2 meter long version will need to be welded, but that's beyond my home shop capabilities. Over all, though, I'm quite satisfied. The bike chain works great, and it has the lovely clankety-clank sound I wanted. Now I just need to collect another 4-5 chains, build the full version plus the mounting frame, and figure out the automatic hand-crank mechanism.
