Bounce, Bounce, Bounce
I have yet to find a properly appreciative audience for this, so I'll just post about it here. As reported here, Miyazaki is going to make an adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle.
I'm a pretty big fan of Miyazaki, but Diana Wynne Jones is one of my personal (young adult) literary saints, along with William Sleator and most of all Diane Duane. They formed the core of my preferred reality during the uglier parts of grade school. The nostalgia I feel is for the relief of the escape, not my life at the time. Here's to excellent, sanity-saving escapist literature!
(I once read a Tolkien quote along the lines of 'the only person who thinks escapism is a bad thing is the jailer' but for the life of me I can't find it now. Instead, a similar Tolkien quote I could find: Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if, when he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison walls?)
