Movie List
This has been going around, and it would be out of character for me to resist it for too long. So here it is...
If....: This has been my favorite movie for a long time now. I don't watch it all that often, at least partially because I only have a bad VHS dub of it. It had many faults, to be sure, but every time I watch it I'm floored by how directly is speaks to me.
American Beauty: As fas as I'm concerned, this is the most perfect movie ever. Perfect script, cast, acting, scoring, cinematography, editing, direction, whatever. It isn't my favorite movie, but it's very solidly in the top ten.
Grosse Point Blank: It's just a silly little movie, but I do love it so. Largely because I relate a little too much to the main character. Having John Cusack doesn't hurt it any either.
The Breakfast Club: Compared to this, I'm always astonished at how utterly useless I find most John Hughes movies. The only glaring fault is that Brian, after the 'you're so conceited' line, doesn't actually tell Claire that his friends don't care about the popular kids. Oh well.
Fight Club: It's all been said by other people. I'll just add that if you're a Fight Club fan, you should really go find a copy of If.... They have a lot in common.
Sneakers and Hackers: Neither are works for the ages, but I know most of both of them by heart. Geek chic.
Real Genius: More geek chic. Every time I watch this I feel a bit sad that college turned out to be nothing like that at all.
Seven Samurai: IMDB lists 9 remakes. 'Nuff said.
2010: In my opinion, this is the best SF movie ever made. Plus I have some very fond memories of being picked up after school by my dad to go see it in the theatre. I liked it a lot better than Dune at the time.
Okay, I'm going to stop this here. It's hard to know where to draw the line between 'favorite' and 'favored'. I need to head out to catch some of the Kurosawa festival at the Varsity now anyway.
