Today the serpentine belt on the car shred itself. Luckily I carry a replacement and appropriate tools in the trunk. But best of all, I got a nice little second-degree burn on my hand in the process. Which is a nice change from my usual pattern of doing crazy stuff like glass blowing and copper smelting without a scratch and then burning myself on cooking equipment.

You carry a spare serpentine belt with you?

I find a similar pattern with my working with hot things and such, too. If it glows, no problem. It's the stuff one can't see as hot that gets me.

I've always had a superstition that if I don't somehow injure myself when doing a project or a repair, then I wasn't doing it right and it won't come out good.

Yeah, that's a dangerous thing to have in the back of my head when I'm working with power tools. :-)

well, not anymore, he doesn't. (unless he bought another one since last night...)

I figured it was a good thing to have on hand. Cheap, doesn't take up much room in the trunk, possible to replace on the side of the road with minimal equipment, and you're completely stuffed if it fails.

It was a good figuring. I'll have to get another. :)

Hey, you didn't tell me about the burn. Congratulations on acquiring a non-cooking one at last!

Definitely a good thought, just ... very ... you.
