One thing to consider is that you might use dunite (obtained from Twin Sisters Mountain, 24 miles east of Bellingham). It's a natural refractory and not usually found on the surface of the earth. (BTW, a book a recommend vaguely on this topic is Roadside Geography, for WA -- it's great). Or you could just use castable refractory to build the smelter.

I'm planning on smelting Iron some time this year. If you're interested, gimme a hollar, and I'll let you know.
