Xmas plans
I get the week following Christmas as vacation.
vixyish will be out of town during that period. It strikes me that I should do something interesting instead of just sitting around the house. Vacation time is one of my most limited commodities, after all. I like the idea of doing something... nonstandard, but I'm having trouble coming up with ideas. A week isn't actually all that long, nor is the dead of winter timing helpful. (And, yes, the southern hemisphere sounds great, but I probably can't afford that.) Turns out polar bear season in Churchill ends in November. Ideas, folks?

Winter Vacation
Re: Winter Vacation
There are also several winter-only roads made of ice which are amusing at least in concept.
A week is sadly not long enough to do any of the our-winter/their-summer Antarctica things, I don't think. But I could be wrong.
I wonder if you can hike the Panama Canal? Of course, that really requires more time than a week, even if you're up for the 10 miles/day I was thinking. It'd be cool to start at one ocean and make it to another on foot.

If you were going to head north, I did a check of Russia and an accidental check of Russian Mission, Alaska (RSH). Flights to RSH are under $1k and get you to 61degN and 161degW. Two regularly-scheduled commercial hops on Cessnas.
$1.1k will get you to NJC (http://gc.kls2.com/airport/NJC), which is at 60degN in Russia. It's an oil town and apparently known for its winter ice sculptures. With the possible exception of any of your friends in extraction industries, you'd probably be the first of your peers to go there. And you'd get to fly Aeroflot from JFK to Moscow to NJC. I don't know if they allow stop-overs in Moscow, but that could be a nice way to stretch the value. Unless I'm mistaken, that's a pretty flat part of Russia, so hopefully nice for aurorae.
I'm doing a check of Argentina now, because it seems like a nice southern destination and I know there's often good fares there for southern summer.
There was a really awesome Singapore deal that I was going to suggest pretty heavily to you, but it looks to not be available that week. I was able to find $500-$600 R/T from SEA to SIN just a month or two ago. :/
(Which is all not to say that there aren't better places to find this kind of information than me, but since I suggested the southern hemisphere thing I figured I ought to at least throw out some data on what was cheapest and southest that week. And then when I was disappointed with that it seemed like checking Russia was a good idea. And, well, there's just something fun about looking this crap up.)

I really want to go take the crazy train to La Paz from Chile some time, though I'm seeing conflicting reports if it is still running. But a flight to Arica would cost $1900 anyway. =\

Hmm. $1.1k would get you to Santa Rosa, Argentina (RSA), and 36S. Highs of ~30C in December. Hard to press much further south for that price :/ Ooh, except YVR to BHI (BahÃa Blanca) is 38S, same price, coastal.
