Solemn Words was filmed a couple of months after The First Rule. It was our first live action movie, and in some ways still my favorite, rough as it is. The story is overly wordy and complicated. Too much time is spent talking about the cool ideas behind the story and not enough telling a cool story with those ideas. It's a rookie mistake, but one that I own fairly comfortably. That's just the kind of story-telling I find most natural.

Shooting of the scene in the arboretum was advanced to take advantage of the reduced volume of air traffic in the weeks following 9-11. The road noise was still horrible, but at least somewhat more constant. We had a decent boom mic at this point, but it wouldn't be until the Canon GL2 much letter that we had a proper balanced audio connection for it, so room tone continues to be a big problem. I was still using a very primitive import technique, so it was edited at 320x240. As with most quality issues, this improved with time.

(As it technically contains IP violations for the background music, it's possible this will disappear off youtube someday. Which is too bad, because I really enjoy those montages. All of the later movies have custom scoring, thankfully.)
